In Uganda, the dream of a child marriage-free world is not only a moral imperative but a necessary step toward a just and prosperous society. Every child deserves the right to a safe childhood, quality education, and the freedom to choose their own future. Yet, millions of girls are still at risk of being married off before their 18th birthday, often leading to early pregnancies, school dropouts, and a cycle of poverty and inequality. Ending child marriage in Uganda requires a united effort—from families and communities to lawmakers and educators. With stronger laws, better enforcement, and sustained public awareness, Uganda can protect its girls, uphold their rights, and empower them to become leaders, innovators, and change-makers. Together, we can build a Uganda where every child grows up free, safe, and supported—a Uganda where child marriage is a thing of the past.

This commitment to ending child marriage took a significant step forward during the recently concluded Interfaith Weekend held at Rwanyanja Parish, Bugangari North, in the Diocese of Kigezi, Uganda. The event brought together a wide range of faith leaders from Bugangari, Bwambara, the wider Rukungiri District, and the Kigezi Region. United by a shared moral and spiritual responsibility, these leaders openly declared their stand against child marriage and pledged to end the practice within their churches and communities.
The faith leaders acknowledged that religious institutions play a powerful role in shaping values, guiding families, and protecting children. By using their spiritual platforms to advocate for child protection and girls’ rights, they have become vital allies in this movement.
All participants expressed heartfelt appreciation to Desk of Hope and its committed partner, the Child Marriage-Free World Organisation, for bringing this initiative to their communities. Their joint efforts in organizing this impactful event were widely recognized and praised. Through this partnership, both organizations have successfully mobilized faith leaders and community influencers to take an active stand against child marriage.
The leaders pledged to continue working closely with Desk of Hope and the Child Marriage-Free World Organisation to educate every Ugandan on the dangers of child marriage, promote child rights, and ensure that no child is forced into early marriage. They committed to using their pulpits, teachings, and influence to protect children—especially girls—and promote a future where every child can grow, learn, and thrive.
This interfaith commitment marks a powerful shift in the fight against child marriage in the Kigezi region. With faith-based leadership, community collaboration, and the support of dedicated partners, we move closer to building a child marriage-free Uganda—where every child is free to dream and choose their own future.
