At Desk of Hope International Ministries Rukungiri, Uganda, we remain committed to working alongside girls, families, schools, faith leaders, communities, government and partners to build a future where every girl is safe, educated, empowered and free to choose her own future. The establishment of 27 November as the UN International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage marks a significant milestone in the global movement to protect children, uphold girls’ rights and accelerate efforts to end child marriage.
At Desk of Hope International Ministries – Rukungiri, Uganda, we warmly welcome this important global commitment. We believe that 27 November must be more than a date on the international calendar. It must become a powerful catalyst for action, accountability and investment in a future where no child is forced into marriage.
Global recognition matters. It keeps child marriage firmly on the international agenda, strengthens political commitment, mobilizes communities and creates momentum for governments and partners to accelerate progress towards ending child marriage by 2030.
Behind every statistic is a child whose childhood, education, freedom or future may be at risk. Child marriage can deprive girls of opportunities, expose them to violence and exploitation, and limit their ability to make decisions about their own lives.
We cannot accept this as inevitable.
Governments must turn commitments into effective policies, adequate resources and strong protection systems. Communities must challenge harmful practices and social norms. Institutions must strengthen prevention, protection and accountability. Development partners must support sustainable, locally led solutions.
And above all, girls must be at the Centre of the solutions.
Ending child marriage is about more than ending a harmful practice. It is about protecting a girl’s right to choose her own future.
Every girl deserves the opportunity to remain in school, access quality healthcare, live free from violence and discrimination, develop her talents, participate in decisions that affect her life and pursue her dreams.
Her childhood should not be traded for survival.
Her education should not be sacrificed for marriage.
Her dreams should not be determined by poverty or harmful social expectations.
Her future should belong to her.
Child marriage is deeply connected to wider inequalities. Poverty, gender discrimination, harmful social norms, limited access to education, insecurity and lack of economic opportunities can increase girls’ vulnerability.
Therefore, ending child marriage requires more than awareness campaigns. It requires transforming the systems and conditions that allow it to continue.
We must keep girls in school.
We must strengthen child protection systems.
We must support families facing economic hardship.
We must challenge harmful gender norms.
We must strengthen access to healthcare and essential services.
We must support survivors and ensure their voices are heard.
And we must create meaningful opportunities for girls to lead and thrive.
Prevention, protection, empowerment and accountability must go hand in hand.
If the world is serious about ending child marriage by 2030, then it must invest in the people and organisations working every day to make that goal a reality.
Locally led organisations are deeply connected to the communities they serve. They understand local realities, build trust with families and leaders, and are often best positioned to identify practical and sustainable solutions.
Local leadership is not an alternative to global action—it is essential to achieving it.
We must invest in locally led movements, community-based organisations, girls’ groups and initiatives that are challenging harmful norms and creating opportunities for children and young people.
And we must invest in girls themselves.
Invest in their education.
Invest in their health.
Invest in their safety.
Invest in their skills.
Invest in their leadership.
Invest in their dreams.
Because when a girl is empowered, she can transform not only her own life, but also her family, community and generation.

No child should be forced into marriage.
No girl should lose her childhood to marriage.
No dream should be silenced by poverty or harmful social norms.

Let this international day strengthen political will.
Let it inspire greater investment.
Let it amplify girls’ voices.
Let it empower communities.
Let it strengthen locally led movements.
Let it drive governments and institutions to greater accountability.
And let it remind the world that ending child marriage is not simply a development goal—it is a matter of human rights, justice, dignity and equality.
Child marriage is preventable. Change is possible. And the time to act is now.
